The activation buys the right to use the player on a particular device. It does not include channels. The channels come from a separate subscription – a playlist URL or a server address with a username and password – which you buy from somebody else and load into the app.
People who buy only the activation end up with a working app and an empty channel list, and conclude the app is broken. It is not; it is waiting for a line.
Activation is usually locked to a device identifier, which has practical consequences.
Free players do the same job for most people. If you are comfortable with one you already have, the money is better spent on a line with capacity and support behind it than on unlocking a particular interface.
Whichever player you settle on, the process is the same: add a playlist URL, or add a server address with a username and password. The device stays, the app stays, the line is the part you change.
