When a service is tied to its own player, your credentials only work inside that player. If the app is pulled, breaks on a device update or is not available for the TV you buy next, the subscription goes with it. There is no exporting it into another player.
Services sold as a plain line – a server address, a username and a password – do not have that problem, because any standard player will take them.
